A few of my favorite…

Something about kids makes me fall in love with life.  They are so full of joy and curiosity.  I once worked in a mall photo shop and absolutely hated it.  Basically the theory is…First pay a lot of money, then bring your kid inside this claustrophobic room where they will be forced to sit uncomfortably and yelled at to smile by a photographer, an assistant, each parent, and all other adults present.  Then pay more money to buy one or two prints of a horribly awkward photo where the kid looks like they are either going to cry or they are sporting the cheesiest smile known to man.  This is when I realized I hated my job and knew that true child photography had to mean getting inside that kid’s world, interacting with them, being a kid with them, and then just hang out.  They forget you have a camera in their face when you are treating them like a person.  Then they open up to you and in those moments you can capture their spirit, their smile, and their personality.  I kindly ask the parent’s of the kids I shoot to not say smile, or don’t do that, or whatever other commentary they have to offer, because I know I can get the shot if I have time with the kid!  I think kids are one of the biggest blessing to life!
